How does Hilo count steps?

The Hilo Band estimates your daily steps by analysing movement detected by its built-in motion sensor. It looks for movement patterns that match natural walking, such as rhythm and repeated arm motion.

Only movements that meet these walking patterns are counted as steps.

Why step counts may differ from other devices

It’s normal for step totals to vary slightly between devices. This can happen for several reasons:

  • Sensor position – Hilo is worn on the wrist, while some devices track movement from the hip or phone.

  • Which arm you wear it on – movement may differ between your dominant and non-dominant arm.

  • Different detection methods – each manufacturer uses its own algorithms to recognise steps.

  • Activity type – activities such as pushing a pram, carrying bags or certain sports may be counted differently.

Because of these factors, step counts from different devices are rarely identical.
